Parkinson¡¯s Disease: Etiology and Clinical Diagnosis
Chung Sun-Ju

Abstract
Parkinson¡¯s disease (PD) is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative disease, characterized by motor symptoms, including bradykinesia, resting tremor, rigidity, and postural instability, and various nonmotor symptoms. The major neuronal cell loss develops in dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra in the midbrain. However, selective neuronal cell loss also occur in the dorsal motor nucleus of Meynert, raphe nuclei, locus ceruleus, and substantia innominate. This extensive neuropathology may explain the diversity of clinical symptoms of PD. The etiology of PD is still unclear. However, genetic and environmental factor may contribute to the development of PD. The accurate diagnosis of PD is very important to provide proper management of clinical symptoms and predict disease outcome. Therefore, the current update
on etiology and clinical diagnosis of PD are comprehensive reviewed.
